Interior vs Exterior Wall Paint: How to Choose the Right Finish

Choosing paint for your home starts with one important question: is the wall indoors or exposed to the weather? Interior and exterior walls face different conditions, so they need products suited to their location. The finish you choose also affects how the space looks and how easily you can maintain it.

Choosing paint for interior walls

For living rooms and bedrooms, consider the look you want under natural and artificial light. A matt finish gives a softer appearance, while finishes with more sheen can make colours look brighter. In busy spaces, also consider how easily the painted surface can be cleaned. Check the product label for its intended use, finish, available shades and care instructions.

Choosing paint for exterior walls

Outside walls face sunlight, rain, dust and temperature changes. Select a paint specifically made for exterior masonry and follow the recommended coating system. The condition of the wall matters as much as the finish: painting over loose material, cracks or damp patches can spoil the result.

Prepare the wall before painting

Inspect the surface first. Remove loose or flaking paint, clean off dust and repair cracks with suitable materials. If you see dampness or seepage, find and address its source before applying a new finish. Use a primer suited to the wall and compatible with your chosen topcoat. Allow each stage to dry as directed on the product pack.

Choose a finish you can live with

Test a small area before committing to a colour. Look at it in daylight and at night, because lighting can change its appearance. For an exterior wall, view the sample in direct sun and shade. When comparing paints, consider the surface condition, desired finish, maintenance needs and total painting system rather than the tin price alone.

Before you buy, confirm the pack size, shade or base, coverage guidance and application instructions for the exact product. If you are unsure which primer, putty or paint suits your wall, ask a painter or the AIH Store team with a photo of the surface.
